Ernst Julius Cohen (1869-1944) fue un destacado químico e historiador de la química holandés de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y la primera mitad del siglo XX. Contribuyó a los campos del polimorfismo, termoquímica, electroquímica y piezoquímica. También estudió isomería física. Sus estudios experimentales sobre alotropía se han publicado en un gran número de publicaciones. Cornelis (“Kees”) de Jager, the co-founder of the journal Solar Physics, passed away on 27 May 2021. He was an exemplary human being, a great scientist, and he had a large impact on our field. In this tribute, we first briefly summarize his life and career and then describe some of his solar activities, from his Ph.D. thesis on the hydrogen lines in 1952 to the book on cycle–climate relations that he completed last year.

'Verplicht onderwijs tot en met het zeventiende levensjaar dient een basis te scheppen voor de ontwikkeling van een menswaardig geestelijk leven in een wereld met korte arbeidstijden en automatisering van productieprocessen', luidt opvallend de laatste van vijftien stellingen in het proefschrift Collections of Maps and Atlases in the Netherlands. Met deze dissertatie promoveerde veertig jaar geleden ingenieur Cornelis Koeman tot doctor in de wiskunde en natuurwetenschappen. Twee decennia later - hij was inmiddels hoogleraar geworden - zou hij met emeritaat gaan. Een mooie gelegenheid dus om eens stil te staan bij de bevlogen grondlegger van de leerstoel historische kartografie aan de Universiteit van Utrecht.

Op Tweede Pinksterdag, 5 juni 2006 overleed in een verzorgingstehuis in De Bilt op 87-jarige leeftijd prof. dr. ir. Cornelis Koeman, de grondlegger van de wetenschappelijke beoefening van de cartografie in Nederland.

This biography appears on the occasion of Ferjan Ormeling's 65th birthday and his retirement as Professor of Cartography. Ferjan Ormeling studied geography in Groningen. Since 1969 he worked at the cartography department at Utrecht University, where he received his PhD in 1983 and was appointed professor in cartography in 1985. Ormeling is active in various fields of cartographic research such as atlas cartography and toponymy. Besides, he is active in various organisations, e.g. the Dutch Association for Cartography (now part of Geo-lnformation of the Netherlands), the International Cartographic Association, the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names and the Scientific Atlas of the Netherlands Foundation.
