The papers in this volume offer a recollection of Leon Van Hove's rich life as a scientist from the "early days" to his latest interest. They also present, from several points of view, his action in favor of scientific collaboration across national and international boundaries and of the cultural integration of Europe where he acted as a leader in several institutionsparticipation of many distinguished scientists and some top officials of the European Community. They are also a tribute to his figure as a scientist and to his important contributions to many areas of mathematical and theoretical physics, from statistical mechanics to field theory and multiparticle production.

Kees de Jager's lange leven is rijk aan ervaringen, observaties en resultaten. Jaren geleden besloot hij deze op schrift te stellen, wat leidde tot scherpzinnige, humorvolle en gepassioneerde columns in het magazine Zenit. De terugblik was geboren en tot op de dag van vandaag levert Kees de Jager elke maand een nieuwe column. Ter ere van zijn honderdste levensjaar zijn deze columns gebundeld in de uitgave ‘Terugblik-2.

Het is deze week twintig jaar geleden dat de Utrechtse fysici Martinus Veltman en Gerard ‘t Hooft te horen kregen dat ze de Nobelprijs voor Natuurkunde hadden gewonnen. Die toekenning was een mijlpaal in de geschiedenis van de Utrechtse universiteit. Taart voor alle studenten en medewerkers gaf uiting aan de jubelstemming.
