In 1908 werd J.J.A.A. Frantzen, leraar aan het Barlaeus gymnasium in Amsterdam, benoemd tot hoogleraar in Utrecht, in 'de beginselen der vergelijkende Germaansche taalwetenschap, de oude talen en letterkunde der Germaansche volken en de Hoogduitsche taal- en letterkunde'.

Onlangs zijn twee voorheen nog onbekende dichtbundels ontdekt van de dichter Geerten Gossaert, die aan de Utrechtse universiteit beter bekend was als professor F.C. Gerretson. Voor die twee dichtbundels gebruikte hij weer een ander pseudoniem.

Muziekwetenschapper en musicus Louis Grijp is op 9 januari overleden. Grijp was bijzonder hoogleraar Nederlandse liedcultuur aan de UU en maakte furore met zijn onderzoek naar de Nederlandse liedcultuur.

Levensbeschrijving van prof. dr. Johanna Maria (Marietje) van Winter. Zij woont sinds 1953 in de Utrechtse binnenstad, was tot 1988 hoogleraar Middeleeuwse geschiedenis aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Ondanks haar hoge leeftijd (90) is zij nog steeds actief als wetenschappelijk onderzoeker.

The Netherlands have a long and proud history in Chinese studies. This volume collects not only articles that trace the historical development of Chinese studies in the Netherlands from the middle of the nineteenth century to the present and beyond, but also studies that deal with Dutch research in specific disciplines within Chinese studies. Chinese studies in the Netherlands originated from the needs of the Dutch colonial administration in the Dutch East Indies, but developed a strong philological emphasis in the first part of the twentieth century, to turn increasingly towards disciplinary research on modern and contemporary China in the last few decades.

This paper offers an initial exploration of the impact of the Dutch United East India Company (VOC) on the circulation of linguistic knowledge. After presenting some forgotten Dutch linguistic fieldworkers who operated overseas, and after examining the fate of their works in Europe, we will examine in a second part the degree to which Europe-based scholars actively solicited VOC-actors to pass on information about the world’s languages.
