Het Instituut Duits bestaat honderd jaar, dat wordt deze maand gevierd met allerlei festiviteiten. Maar van een echt 'instituut Duits' is al lang geen sprake meer. De belangstelling voor Duitsland en de Duitse cultuur groeit echter weer, en oude vooroordelen vallen weg.

This contribution affords insights into the history of Germanic Studies at the University of Utrecht in the years 1908-2008, with special attention to the period following the retirement of its first professor, J.J.A.A. Frantzen, in 1923.
