Natuurkundige Martinus Veltman (1931-2021) zat provoceren in het bloed. De een vond hem een held, de ander een bruut. Geboren in Waalwijk, met om de hoek schoenenfabriek Van Haren, koos Tini na zijn studie in Utrecht voor de flitsende maar ruwe wereld van de elementaire deeltjesfysica. Allergisch voor autoriteit en recht voor zijn raap hield hij zich staande te midden van Amerikaanse hegemonie. Veltman had het lef om een door collega?s kansloos geacht pad in te slaan. Grote hulp daarbij was Schoonschip, zijn computerprogramma dat kon rekenen én met formules kon omgaan. Samen met promovendus Gerard ?t Hooft forceerde Veltman in 1971 een doorbraak die de weg effende naar het huidige standaardmodel van elementaire deeltjes; waarna de stevige, onconventionele en uitgesproken Veltman en de frêle, keurige maar sociaal onhandige ?t Hooft uit elkaar groeiden en Tini Utrecht verruilde voor Ann Arbor. In 1999 wonnen ze samen de Nobelprijs. Gelukkig. 00?Verrek, dat is ?t!? portretteert een eigenzinnig, precies en invloedrijk fysicus die altijd contact zocht met het experiment. Die controversieel uit de hoek kon komen, maar met een goed hart, geliefd bij velen.

Ontwikkelingen in de tropische diergeneeskunde bij de faculteit Diergeneeskunde in Utrecht (1915-2013)

This biography appears on the occasion of Ferjan Ormeling's 65th birthday and his retirement as Professor of Cartography. Ferjan Ormeling studied geography in Groningen. Since 1969 he worked at the cartography department at Utrecht University, where he received his PhD in 1983 and was appointed professor in cartography in 1985. Ormeling is active in various fields of cartographic research such as atlas cartography and toponymy. Besides, he is active in various organisations, e.g. the Dutch Association for Cartography (now part of Geo-lnformation of the Netherlands), the International Cartographic Association, the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names and the Scientific Atlas of the Netherlands Foundation.

The gradual realization by Günter Schilder of his monumental series Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica is dealt with here, on the basis of interviews with the author. At an early date its aims were established as: the unveiling and inventory of the map and atlas production in Amsterdam in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, focusing on the Dutch participation in the early geographical discoveries, and the conservation, restoration and the production of facsimiles of those maps in order to safeguard this material for the future. The selection of the material is accounted for, both regarding the publishers and authors and the selection of map types. Input by three different publishing houses (Israel, Canaletto and Hes & De Graaf) during this project is indicated as well. The series was completed by volume IX. To improve access to the whole series a general index of personal names, maps by region and a dozen thematic subjects covered by all nine volumes has been compiled.
